Assistant Vice President/Senior Catastrophe Analyst

Position Title:                    Assistant Vice President/Senior Catastrophe Analyst

Reports to:                         Head of Catastrophe Modeling

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Catastrophe Analyst will work as a member of Holborn’s Analytics team, which is comprised of actuaries, catastrophe modelers, programmers, and data analysts.  He or she will gather, prepare and analyze cat exposure data to assist clients with underwriting, risk management, and portfolio and reinsurance optimization.  The individual in this role will gain exposure to various areas of insurance and will develop an understanding of how to structure and price bespoke reinsurance solutions to fit a client’s risk appetite.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide guidance to clients on portfolio risk characteristics to support underwriting activities. Evaluate and present results of analyses to both internal and external clients.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with reinsurers, clients, brokers, and all internal staff. Respond to client requests for information and queries.
  • Spearhead model building and provide recommendations to streamline, automate, and improve current processes.
  • Model complex risk exposures using Moody’s RMS RiskLink/RiskModeler and Verisk Touchstone.
  • Leverage Holborn’s proprietary tools in catastrophe risk assessment.
  • Prepare exposure data and import for analyses.
  • Assess data quality and make necessary assumptions for modeling.
  • Analyze changes in exposure and associated impact on models.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BA/BS in Mathematics, Finance, Economics, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of insurance/reinsurance industry experience.
  • Prior hands-on cat modeling experience (RMS and AIR).
  • Expertise with Excel, MS SQL, VBA and/or another object-oriented scripting language, e.g., Python, Java, or C.
  • Certification(s) given preference including Associate in Reinsurance (ARe), Certified Cat Risk Analyst (RMS), Certified Extreme Event Modeler (AIR), Certified Specialist in Catastrophe Risk (ISCM)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • In-depth knowledge of insurance/reinsurance concepts and terminology.
  • Ability to perform queries and manipulate data within a database environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with a solid understanding of probability and statistics.
  • High level of creativity, ability to devise novel solutions from unstructured problems.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to be flexible in adapting to changes in priorities and assignments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information and issues.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate independently, with minimal supervision, and as a member of a high functioning team.
