August 1 Cat Update

With four named storms through July and a possible fifth imminent, 2011 is starting as an active year, as forecast. The most recent tropical storm, Don, dissipated off the Texas coast on Friday, July 29th, without damage.

Current weather conditions are at expected levels for early August. As seen in the attached map, 80-degree waters now extend up to Delaware. Most coastlines in the Gulf of Mexico are in the mid-to-upper 80’s. The Bermuda High is currently in an easterly position, as it has been over much of the last two weeks. This correlates with more exposure on the Atlantic coast and less in the Gulf. The La Niña conditions in the Pacific continue, but appear to be weakening.

There are no Tropical systems to report today, although it is likely one will develop within the next 36 hours from an area of low pressure located approximately 400 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Our next scheduled report will be on August 15th for our Tropical Weather edition, and on September 1st for the Northeast and Gulf editions.
